A Bedtime Story
The clothes made of their material possessed the wonderful quality of being invisible to any man who was unfit for his office or unpardonably stupid.
You are no doubt familiar with the story of the Emperor - the one that was wearing no clothes. He was naked and everybody knew it, and yet nobody was willing to be the one to tell the truth.
Lately, to me, there seems to be a lot more of that going around. These days, there seems to be a lot more "going along with" than there are people who are willing to call a nude -- a nude.
When did it stop being cool to think and act for yourself? How is it that playing it safe has become so acceptable? What did anyone ever really get out of just going along with what the crowd says is or -
is not?
At an hour when most of the civilized world is fast asleep, we sat there in silence for what was probably only a minute, maybe two. So numb that we couldn't even remember the day of the week, we were completely at a loss for what we were supposed to do next and there didn't seem to be anything to look forward to, but more of the same.
And so...
we sat.
After that, we just kept sitting.
Sitting.
Sitting and staring - silently.
Auguste and I were on one side, and she, she was on the other.
We were a team, Auguste and I, but could we stick together? Could the two of us remain strong? She, with her suspicious looks and her innocent act was slowly breaking us down -- this intruder, this obstacle between us and a good night's sleep, this bane of my existence; the existence which is a whole lot more effective when it is operating on a full tank of sleep.
We were clearly at some kind of a stand still here and neither side was backing down.
And then, as if I had just been given permission from somewhere up above, I turned to Auguste and I said it:
"You know, I have to admit this. I'm not all that in love with her. To tell you the truth, I don't even think I like her all that much."
Auguste, emerging from his trance, looked at me and agreed:
"You don't know how relieved I am to hear you say that because I think I feel the same way too."
And with that we were suddenly set free!
We had read so many books on parenting. All of the stories about how parents instantly fall in love with their newborns, all of those examples of love at first sight had left us feeling as if there was something wrong with us because -
This was not our reality at ALL.
We spent our first few days as parents afraid to admit to ourselves and to each other what was really going on.
We were scared to tell the truth:
This girl is ruining our lives!
It was not for us (any of us), a warm and fuzzy affair. I mean, we had faith that it would all come together, eventually, but it was hard to give up sleep. It took some time for us to fall in love with our daughter and we did, and head over heels. Only first we had to get to know her. That took us a few days, but once we told the truth and stopped trying to live up to what the books had said, we could relax, laugh and have a good time while we were wishing we were sleep at two o'clock in the morning.
And you?
Don't be afraid to tell the truth to yourself and then don't be afraid to say that truth out loud.
It takes courage to tell the truth but the reward is an access to real power. Open up your eyes and take a good look. Are there clothes on the king or not?
Pretending is so exhausting and hard. Today, search inside of your own soul and decide what is SO -
for you.
If the man, according to you, is not wearing clothes, shouldn't it be O.K. for you to say so?
Today, don't sit and suffer in silence. Don't go along just so you can get along. Search your soul, locate your truth, say it loud and set yourself free!
Besides, playing it safe is far too overrated, anyway...
Dana
Have a great week!
Former Host of Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom and Founder of Remote Area Medical, Stan Brock
Who hasn't heard of Stan Brock?
For years, Stan was a regular fixture in America's living rooms as co-host of Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom.
That program hasn't been on the air for many years now - but the legacy remains. If you watch TV at all, or if you go to the movies, sooner or later you'll hear a reference to Wild Kingdom. One character will refer to another one as crazy as "that guy on Wild Kingdom who wrestles the snakes."
That's the Stan Brock Americans, young and old, have known and loved for years. But that is just one Stan Brock persona.
Stan grew up as a proper English schoolboy. At age 17 he moved to South America where he spent the next 15 years living on one of the world's largest working cattle ranches.
He eventually became manager of the ranch - and of its crew of Indian vaqueros.
It was his experience there that led naturally to his work with the animals of Wild Kingdom and numerous other television and movie projects. Stan also is a pioneer Amazon bush pilot, a noted authority on wildlife management and conservation, and an expert on rain forests and their inhabitants.
But for 25 years there was one haunting image that Stan couldn't get out of his mind - the isolated Indian families who had no medical care. When he lived there Stan provided what medical care he could as an educated, but non-medical person, but he always wanted to find a way to provide these people with the basic medical care that most of us take for granted.
He did it through an organization he founded called Remote Area Medical, an all-volunteer, airborne medical corps that takes skilled medical professionals from various parts of the developed world, to the undeveloped world.
RAM, as the group is called, has completed some 200 missions. RAM volunteer doctors, dentists, optometrists, and nurses have treated thousands of patients for everything from dietary decencies to cleft pallet surgery.. Volunteers sometimes often hundreds of patients in a single dawn-to-dusk day. RAM veterinarians work side-by-side with other volunteers to treat the dogs, cattle, and other animals of the people RAM serves.
Many will remember Stan Brock as the fearless and adventurous host of Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom, but what I suspect he will forever be remembered for is his compassionate commitment to the well being of people, as demonstrated in the remarkable work that he is doing to further the possibility that health care should be a right of everyone and not a privilege for just a few.
Stan Brock is the REAL kind of hero.
DR: Tell me about your life and your work.
SB: What is most relevant for this program right now, Dana, is to replicate it throughout the United States because we have a mandate from the American public apparently, with huge quantities of mail coming here from concerned citizens, about the health care crisis in the United States.
Up until a few months ago when 60 Minutes and CBS happened to do a profile of Remote Area Medical's work in this country, the only people who really knew who we were, were the poor. Now the general public knows about us in large numbers. Also the foreign public knows about us now because 60 Minutes plays in a lot of foreign countries. I met somebody yesterday who had been in a hotel in one of the Baltic States and saw us on 60 Minutes.
The problem is, that as long as I have been in this country, which is a long time, people have not been able to...

The 100 Years Project Featured Guest - Eric Demby
Name:
Eric Demby
Age:
38 years old
Where are you from:
I was born on a farm in Central Main, I grew up in Boston, went to high school in Connecticut and I have lived in New York for the last twenty years.
Where do you live:
Prospect Heights, Brooklyn
Occupation:
I run a flea market called The Brooklyn Flea.
100 Years from now what do want to be remembered for?
As of today, I would most like to be remembered for helping Brooklyn, in a general sense, become a place that more people travel to, and a place that is easier to be successful in, for the people who live here, as they try to pursue their passions.
I want to help lead the charge that...

Morale Support
“Imagine if, for just one second, everyone in the world, was cheering you on -- I thought this thought out loud.
“I wonder what would that be like?
My high school coach had a tradition. He insisted that, during every game, all his players applaud what was happening on the court. The guys on the team that were sitting on the bench while the game was being played, were given the responsibility of, not only watching every move of every play, but of supporting and acknowledging the work that was being done.
He called it “being in the game.
Whether a rebound had been snatched, a shot had been blocked or a basket had been made, we were to stand and applaud as an act of encouragement and support. We stood and applauded with enthusiasm, passion and conviction. There would be no exceptions!
It didn’t matter whether we were playing at another school, facing the jeers of the opposing team’s fans, or whether we were playing at home in front of our family, friends and supporters –
We were always expected to stand to cheer!
I am convinced that cheering and supporting contributed to the fact that we were always a winning team.
Displaying support from the sidelines to someone who is playing on the court, plays a critical role in determining the outcome of a game. To be a successful team, a winning team, everybody has to
“Be in the game.
As a team, we learned the meaning of “having someone else’s back. We learned the meaning of “being the force behind the finish. As a team we cheered each other through both good plays and bad, all the way to the win.
In any game and on any team, the support that you provide someone else, could be the very thing that could make the difference between a win for the entire team. In the world of community, family and friends, consider that if the team wins, so do you.
As you step out today, as you step out to play --
“Be in the game!
Participate by acknowledging someone for who they are and for what they are accomplishing.
Applaud someone. Stand for them, and cheer them on.
That’s my two cent’s (for whatever it’s worth).

Why I am recommending this website:
It’s time that women fight back! Street harassment has been plaguing women for far too long! Let’s band together and put an end to this threatening behavior and quite frankly, act of violence toward women.
From the Website:
Hollaback! is a movement dedicated to ending street harassment using mobile technology. Street harassment is one of the most pervasive forms of gender-based violence and one of the least legislated against. Comments from “You’d look good on me to groping, flashing and assault are a daily, global reality for women and LGBTQ individuals. But it is rarely reported, and it’s culturally accepted as ‘the price you pay’ for being a woman or for being gay. At Hollaback!, we don’t buy it.
We believe that everyone has a right to feel safe and confident without being objectified. Sexual harassment is a gateway crime that creates a cultural environment that makes gender-based violence OK. There exists a clear legal framework to reproach sexual harassment and abuse in the home and at work, but when it comes to the streets—all bets are off. This gap isn’t because street harassment hurts any less, it’s because there hasn’t been a solution. Until now. The explosion of mobile technology has given us an unprecedented opportunity to end street harassment—and with it, the opportunity to take on one of the final new frontiers for women’s rights around the world.
By collecting women and LGBTQ folks’ stories and pictures in a safe and share-able way with our very own mobile phone applications, Hollaback! is creating a crowd-sourced initiative to end street harassment. Hollaback! breaks the silence that has perpetuated sexual violence internationally, asserts that any and all gender-based violence is unacceptable, and creates a world where we have an option—and, more importantly—a response.

The Book of General Ignorance: Everything You Think You Know is Wrong
Why I am recommending this book:
For the most part we take knowledge for granted. Too often, without challenge, we accept what "experts" offer as fact. The Book of General Ignorance provides fascinating information while it re-answers some of our most conventional questions, but what I like most about this book is that it encourages us to be more curious.

If you think you're a trivia expert, British TV men Lloyd (producer of the hit comedy shows Spitting Image and Black Adder) and Mitchinson (writer for Quite Interesting) may disabuse you of the notion that you're a true scholar of random facts-and quickly. Their surprisingly lengthy tome is jam-packed with real answers to a number of less-than-burning questions-camels store fat, not water, in their humps; only five out of every 100,000 paper clips are used to clip papers; the first American president was in fact Peyton Randolph-that you nevertheless may be embarrassed to have completely wrong. Although some of the entries rely on technicality more than actual excavation of obscure fact (Honolulu is technically the world's largest city, despite the fact that 72% of its 2,127 square miles is underwater), these page-length entries prove entertaining and informative, perfect for trivia buffs and know-it-alls; it also makes a fine coffee table conversation piece and a handy resource for prepping clever cocktail party banter.
